Struggling with Grief? How Grief Counselling Can Help

Table of Contents

Grief is a natural part of being human โ€” but knowing that doesnโ€™t necessarily make it easier to bear. Whether your loss is the death of a loved one, the end of a meaningful relationship, a major life change, or the loss of health or identity, grief can feel like a tidal wave that is hard to understand and even harder to put into words.

At Kardia4Life Counselling, I understand how disorienting and exhausting grief can be. Through online grief counselling in St. Thomas and across Ontario, you donโ€™t have to walk through it alone.ย

Grief counselling offers a compassionate, non-judgmental space to help you process your loss and gently support your heart, mind, and spirit as you move forward at your own pace.

Understanding Grief: More Than โ€œJustโ€ Sadness

Grief is complex. It can include:

    • Sadness, longing, or emptiness
    • Anger, irritability, or frustration
    • Guilt, regret, or โ€œwhat ifโ€ thoughts
    • Anxiety, restlessness, or a sense of dread
    • Numbness or feeling disconnected from yourself or others

Grief does not only affect emotions. It can touch many areas of life:

    • Body: changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, aches and pains, a โ€œheavyโ€ feeling in the chest or stomach
    • Thinking: trouble concentrating, racing thoughts, replaying memories, difficulty making decisions, fear or anxiety about the future
    • RRelationships: pulling away from others, feeling misunderstood, not knowing how to talk about the loss, or worrying you might be a burden or โ€œdrag others down.โ€

Mental health organizations such as the Canadian Mental Health Association remind us that grief is both a feeling and a process, and that it is a natural, healthy response to loss, even when it feels anything but easy.ย

There is no neat, predictable timeline for grief. We all grieve differently. Some people cry easily; others stay busy. Some need silence and solitude; others need connection and conversation.

There is no โ€œrightโ€ way to grieve โ€” but support can help you understand, honour, and make space for your way.

    What Is Grief Counselling?

Grief counselling is a form of therapy that supports people as they navigate the emotional, cognitive, physical, and spiritual impact of loss.

    It is not about:

    • โ€œGetting over itโ€
    • Forgetting the person or loss
    • Rushing you to โ€œmove onโ€

    Instead, grief counselling focuses on:

    • Creating space for your grief to be seen and heard
    • Understanding how loss is affecting different areas of your life
    • Learning how to live with your loss in a way that honours your story and your loved one
    • Finding the strength to slowly move forward, even if the pain is present

At Kardia4Life Counselling, grief counselling is offered online to adults in St. Thomas and across Ontario. Sessions are paced according to your readiness and needs, to help you find steadier ground, renewed meaning, and gentler ways of carrying what has happened.ย

How Grief Counselling Can Support You

Everyoneโ€™s experience is unique, but there are some common ways grief counselling can help.

    Emotional Processing

Grief can stir a wide range of emotions โ€” sometimes all in the same day. Counselling offers a safe, supportive space to:

    • Name what you are feeling, even when it doesnโ€™t fit what others expect
    • Explore emotions that may feel confusing, conflicting, or โ€œtoo muchโ€
    • Give yourself permission to grieve in your own way, without judgment

Putting words to your experience can be an important step in feeling less alone with it.

    Coping Strategies for Day-to-Day Life

When grief is heavy, even basic tasks can feel overwhelming. You may find it hard to get out of bed, concentrate at work, make decisions, or stay connected to others.

Together, we can develop practical, realistic strategies to help you:

    • Manage waves of emotion and unexpected triggers
    • Support your sleep, energy, and daily routines
    • Navigate special dates, holidays, and anniversaries
    • Communicate your needs and limits to others more clearly

The goal is not to remove grief, but to help you function and care for yourself in the midst of it.

    Finding Meaning

One of the deeper aspects of grief counselling is meaning-making โ€” gently exploring what your loss means in the context of your life and values. This does not mean finding the positives in what has happened. This might include reflecting on:

    • How this loss has shaped your perspective or priorities
    • What you have learned about yourself, your relationships, or your faith
    • How might you find ways to grow love, carry memories, or create a legacy moving forward

Finding meaning does not erase the pain, but it can give it direction and help you feel less lost within it.

    Rebuilding Life Around Your Loss

Grief often changes us. You may feel that your world no longer makes sense, or that your roles and identity have shifted.

Counselling can support you as you:

    • Explore who you are now, in light of the loss
    • Gradually re-engage with relationships, activities, or interests
    • Create space for both sorrow and moments of joy or peace
    • Processing grief” – everyone’s journey is unique, and therapy can provide an opportunity to work through aspects of grief that can lead to growth and resiliency, finding purpose in life in the face of loss
    • Imagine what it might look like to move forward while still honouring what (or who) you have lost

Grief work is often about learning to live with the loss, rather than leaving it behind.

Our Approach to Grief Counselling at Kardia4Life

My approach to grief counselling is holistic, compassionate, and tailored to the person in front of me. Sessions may draw from:

    • Talk therapy โ€“ A warm, open space to share your story at your own pace, including details you may not feel comfortable sharing elsewhere.
    • Mindfulness and grounding โ€“ Strategies to help you stay present and gently support your nervous system when emotions feel intense. These can connect with Mindfulness-Based Therapy (MBCT) if you find that helpful.
    • Creative expression โ€“ Journalling, imagery, or other forms of expression when words are hard to find.
    • Somatic awareness โ€“ Noticing how grief shows up in the body and exploring safe ways to release tension or โ€œheldโ€ emotion.
    • Spiritual support (optional) โ€“ For those who desire it, we can gently explore the spiritual dimension of grief: questions of faith, meaning, and connection. If Christian faith is important to you, we can integrate it more intentionally through Faith-Based / Christian counselling.

You are welcome to bring all of your pain, questions, and hopes into the room โ€” at whatever pace feels manageable.

Is Grief Counselling Right for You?

Grief counselling is for anyone who has experienced a meaningful loss, whether it happened recently or many years ago. It may be helpful if:

    • You feel stuck in your grief or unsure how to move forward
    • You are experiencing anxiety, low mood, or emotional numbness after a loss
    • You find it hard to talk about your grief with family or friends
    • Youโ€™ve lost interest in daily activities or relationships
    • You want a safe, consistent space to explore your loss and how it has impacted you

You do not need to wait until things feel unbearable. Support can be valuable at any stage โ€” from the first weeks of shock to later seasons when grief resurfaces in new ways.

    Moving Forward, Together

Grief work does not mean forgetting. It means finding new ways to carry love, memory, and meaning with you as you continue living.

At Kardia4Life Counselling, my role is to walk alongside you with empathy and care as you:

    • Make sense of your loss in the context of your life
    • Hold space for both pain and the possibility of growth
    • Discover steadier ground, one step and one breath at a time

Your grief may always have a place in your story. Even so, it is possible to find more peace and to move forward in life with the pain, rather than against it.
