Why Credentials and Training Matter in Counselling

When people begin looking for therapy, it is not always easy to know what different titles mean. Terms like counsellor, therapist, and psychotherapist are often used broadly, and many people understandably assume they all reflect the same training and qualifications.

At Kardia4Life Counselling, we believe it is important to offer some clarity, because when you are seeking support for something personal and meaningful, you deserve to know who is providing your care.

A Registered Social Worker (RSW) is a regulated professional in Ontario who is accountable to the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. That registration matters, because it reflects professional standards, ethical responsibility, and public accountability. You can learn more through the Ontario College’s public register.

It is also helpful to look at the therapist’s education and additional training. At Kardia4Life Counselling, Cheryl Vanderveen is a Registered Social Worker (RSW), Psychotherapist who holds a Master of Social Work (MSW). In addition to her graduate training, she has advanced clinical training in:

She also brings years of experience in community mental health, grief support, dementia services, later-life concerns, and private practice. You can read more on the About Cheryl page.

For us, this is not about making things overly complicated. It is simply about helping people make informed decisions. Credentials, education, training, and experience all shape the quality of care you receive.

Whether you are seeking support for grief and loss, stress and anxiety, life transitions, or self-esteem and personal growth, we believe it is reasonable to want care that is both compassionate and well-qualified.
